Alex Charrington’s abstract paintings are often created using mechanical processes as a starting point, resulting in a body of work which is as much about the business of making as it is about optical illusion. Inspired by the painstaking ritual of Renaissance panel painting, Charrington’s vibrant geometric paintings often comprise multiple layers. This way of working translates effectively into the technique of screenprinting, which allows the artist to build up the image gradually. The resulting prints are densely coloured and seem to pulsate with Charrington’s overlapping repeated motifs, playing with the viewers’ perception of perspective.
Charrington graduated from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne in 2005. He has exhibited widely in the UK and continues to live and work in in Newcastle upon Tyne.
