Working primarily as a painter, Jamaican-born artist Berrisford Boothe also makes prints, photographs, digital and installation works. Rich in texture and multi-layered, Booth’s visual language explores his interest in ritual, intuition, and improvised structure through abstract, expressive imagery.
In the artist’s words: ‘Each mark, the underlying geometry, and the final veils of colour, along with the illusions of solids or voids, is in the end, evidence of activity. My decisions, my alchemist rituals, of unplanned actions and spontaneous invocations, are my art.’
Boothe collaborated with Kip Gresham in 2006 during his time on sabbatical in Cambridge. The limited edition print ‘Untitled’ continues the artist’s exploration into the collaged circular forms which he returns to throughout his practice. Screenprinting, which combines elements of layering, repetition and improvisation, is perfectly suited to Boothe’s process-focussed approach to making work.
Boothe is represented by the June Kelly Gallery (New York), The Sande Webster Gallery (Philadelphia) and Montanette T. Jones’ MusArt Gallery (Atlanta). His work has been featured in exhibitions at The Allentown Art Museum, The Fabric Workshop and Museum, Philadelphia, PA, The African American Museum, Philadelphia, PA, The William Benton Museum of Art, The New Arts Program, Kutztown, PA and The State Museum of PA. He lives and works in Pennsylvania, USA.
