Claude Heath’s map-like drawings are investigations into tactility and space. He creates images that hover between what is seen and what is known. He assembles various techniques and strategies such as drawing blindfolded, drawing on surfaces hidden from sight, or using stereoscopic aerial photography and digital moving images as sources. The drawings sometimes reveal hidden elements such as the interior contours of natural forms.
Heath’s drawings evoke movement, the organisation of sensations, and the ‘tracking’ of edges in an approach that is occasionally reminiscent of scientific imaging. His instinctive linear style and interest in pattern enables him to exploit printmaking techniques such as screenprinting and monoprinting, where in collaboration with Kip Gresham, the artist can experiment with layering and removing ink from the plate, to achieve a unique image that pulses with movement.
