Daryl Waller has worked in a range of mediums over the years since graduating from the Royal College of Art in 2003; these mediums include painting, drawing, animation, video, performance, installation, public intervention, sound and photography. His paintings and drawings have explored a number of themes including love and relationships, religion and existentialism, and often feature mythical or fantastical characters, sometimes with use of text. He is interested in moments in time to tell a story or communicate an idea, comment or joke. He is also interested in folklore (particularly old English and European), post-modern-myths, mark-making and describes his work as ‘anti-style’.
Daryl has made four prints in collaboration with Kip Gresham at the studio. In ‘The Unknown Kiss’, two techniques have been used in combination; etching allows the artist to describe the figures using fine lines, and aquatint creates an atmospheric, ‘smoky’ background. Screen-printing is better suited to the graphic imagery of ‘Tom Violence’, ‘Ned’ and ‘Now I’m Free’ where a strong silhouette dominates each image.
Daryl has exhibited in London, Cornwall, Berlin, San Francisco, and Shanghai, and has co-curated numerous exhibitions. He has also created album covers for Lou Barlow (of Sebadoh and Dinosaur Jr fame) The Loose Salute, and Jason Lytle (Grandaddy). He is an associate artist at Kneehigh Theatre and has worked for them as an illustrator / artist / designer since 1999.
In 2011 Daryl founded a record label called Flawedcore Records and released his debut album 'The Baby Blues' in 2015.
He lives and works in Fishponds, Bristol.
