David Webb creates a sense of balance and energy within his dynamic abstract compositions. Subtle textures and deliberately visible brushstrokes also key within the artist’s visual language. Webb’s oblique forms refer to Mediterranean architecture, particularly painted Cypriot Byzantine churches. A vibrant colour palette combined with textured areas evokes shimmering, climatic heat; these are works infused with history and memory.
Webb began working with Kip Gresham in 2015 exploring various techniques including screen printing, etching, chine-collé, photo etching and monoprinting. The introduction to the medium of printmaking has had a lasting impact on the artist; he has since returned to make editioned prints; recent works include ‘Galata’, ‘Kissonerga’ and ‘Kakopetria’.
Webb has exhibited extensively in the UK and internationally. Recent solo shows include dalla Rosa Gallery and The Royal Over-Seas League, London. Group shows include the Jerwood Drawing and Painting Prizes, RA Summer Exhibition, dalla Rosa, Eagle Gallery and Kapil Jariwala Gallery. He has been awarded numerous residencies including the Triangle Workshop NY, Yaddo, MacDowell, and the Vermont Studio Centre in the U.S.
He lives and works in London
