Jo Taylor celebrates the energy, grace and strength of horses in her dynamic drawings, paintings and limited edition prints. Informed by an intrinsic knowledge of her subject, Taylor frequently works from life using often using studies made in stables as her starting point.
In the artist’s words: ‘I try to capture a sense of their power and presence… I am trying to put muscle down and breathe life into the work, so hopefully the viewer can feel as if they can see the other side of the beast in – as though they can walk around it.’
Taylor has worked with Kip Gresham for several years creating screenprints and etchings. Both techniques are able to capture a fluidity of line and swathes of transparent colour which go beyond simply describing her equine subjects’ anatomy in a technical sense. In Gresham’s words, ‘These are not just drawings of description, these animals are alive.’
Taylor has exhibited widely showing work at The Royal Academy of Arts, London, as well as internationally at galleries in America and in Dubai. She was artist in residence at the Department of Veterinary Science, Liverpool University from 2002 – 2008.
She lives and works in rural Lancashire.
