Royal Academician John Carter is best known for his minimalist geometric constructions which he describes as ‘wall objects’. Inspired in part by the European concrete and constructivist artists of the early twentieth century, these pieces hover somewhere between sculpture and painting. Drawing and printmaking form a core part of Carter’s practice. Screenprinting in particular allows the artist the flexibility to work in layers, producing images that play with rotating identical shapes and perspective. It also suits Carter’s desire to achieve a solidity in colour and surface that equates to that seen in his wall objects.
Carter has exhibited widely in Europe, particularly in Germany, and his work is held in numerous significant public collections. He has taught in several art schools including Chelsea College of Art and Design, London. He was elected a Royal Academician in 2007 and lives and works in London.
