John Gibbons makes sculpture using a range of materials including stainless steel, copper and lead. With an emphasis upon physicality and construction, his work varies in scale and is characterised by an interest in layered surface texture and an exploration of ideas around containment and protection. These ideas have informed Gibbons' sessions with Kip Gresham where screen printing has allowed him to experiment with different mark-making techniques and vivid colour. The resulting abstract images communicate a sense of movement through the layering of lines that seem to hover in space.
Gibbons exhibits internationally with shows in Europe and the USA. His solo exhibitions in the UK include: The National Portrait Gallery and the Serpentine Gallery, London and Kettles Yard, Cambridge. His work is held in numerous public and private collections including, Tate, Arts Council England, Art Gallery of Alberta, Canada, The Modern Art Centre/Calouste Gulbenkian, Lisbon,The Museum of Contemporary Art, Barcelona, The Czech Museum of Fine Arts, Prague, The Whitworth Art Gallery, Manchester, Crawford Art Gallery, Cork, Jesus College, University of Cambridge, Syracuse University, USA.
He was elected Fellow of the Royal Society of British Sculptors in 2003. In 2009 he was elected a member of Aosdána. He lives and works in London.
