Kip Gresham has always made prints, describing the activity as being 'as natural as standing up'. Of late, his work has tended to focus on the non-figurative but, given the ease with which his chosen media can appropriate from the wider world, he has often incorporated or manipulated found imagery in his prints.
Gresham has a strong interest in the language of visual information. His early work centred on making the functional (maps, logarithmic tables, newspapers) illegible in the conventional sense but poetic in visual terms. In recent years, the demand for his collaborative skills has left little time for him to explore his own ideas but when he does, the role of pattern and structure are at the forefront of his practice.
Gresham studied at The University of Newcastle on Tyne from 1969 – 1973 and then Manchester Polytechnic from 1973 – 1974. He has directed and been master printer at a number of print studios including The Chilford Hall Press (1982 – 1989), Curwen Chilford Prints Ltd, (1989 – 1994), Gresham Studio Ltd, 1(994 – 2001) and The Print Studio, Cambridge (2001 to date). He has exhibited widely and his prints are held in many national collections. He lives and works in Cambridge.
