Print of The Month: October 2019
A mathematical, graphic approach is applied to the works created by London-based artist Trevor Sutton. Throughout his career, he has worked in a non-figurative field with constructions of circular, square and rectangular shape and line. More recently, Sutton’s work is dedicated to grids and columns of colour displayed here in this limited edition screenprint Giant Steps. An arrangement and ‘systemic beauty’ is typically applied to both his work and working environment [1]. This edition, which develops upon a series of monotype prints created at The Print Studio in 2010, shares this considered aesthetic [1].
Visual parallels to geological features found at the Giant’s Causeway gave rise to the titular inspiration for this print created following the artist’s visit to Northern Ireland the previous year. A similar construction of interlocking columns from the UNESCO World Heritage site are here displayed in pillars of colour.
the grandeur of the naturally tessellated basalt columns had a profound effect upon the artist. [2]
Giant Steps is an edition of 20. Prints from the edition are available to purchase for £750 incl VAT.
Sutton is currently showing examples of recent paintings and works on paper in Trevor Sutton: Place at the Zuleika Gallery, Mason’s Yard. Many of the titles suggest an ongoing inspiration from various travel locations. The show runs until 1st November, click here for more details.
Sutton is a multiple award-winner and exhibits internationally. His works feature in many renowned collections, including those of the Arts Council, the British Council and the Tate Gallery.
In 2010, Sutton made monotypes at the studio displaying a similar mark making technique used in his editioned screenprints.
