Print of The Month: September 2020
In her own words, Rachael Clewlow’s works explore everything from ‘the banal to the interesting to the freakish’. Her visual recordings and optical effects make clear associations with artists such as Bridget Riley. Vibrant and intricate, Clewlow translates her every day movements into these abstracted ‘maps’. The medium of screenprint allows the artist to experiment with overlaying and colour achieving a flatness not possible in painting.
In 2013, Clewlow exhibited alongside Alex Charrington and Nick Kennedy in ‘Orders of Scale’ featuring works made in collaboration with us The Print Studio, Cambridge. The show explored the dialogue between the three Newcastle-based artists ‘who employ a rigorous and empirical approach in their individual practices’ [1]. The featured prints, drawings and paintings complimented the collective’s aesthetic for colour theories, grids, systems and graphics.
Clewlow studied at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne. She has exhibited widely in the UK and lives and works in Newcastle upon Tyne.
